Troubleshooting Candle Issues: Fixing Tunneling and Wick Problems

If your candle is having trouble burning evenly or if the wick won't stay lit, try one of these methods:

  1. The Aluminum Foil Method: Wrap aluminum foil around the top edge of the jar, leaving an opening in the center for the flame. Burn the candle for about an hour; the heat should help even out the wax.
  2. Scooping Excess Wax: If your wick struggles to stay lit, carefully remove excess wax with a butter knife or small spoon to level the surface, ensuring the wick is at least 1/4" to 1/2" tall. Relight the candle once the wick is properly adjusted.
  3. Pro Tip for Wooden Wicks: If a wooden wick isn’t staying lit or you’ve trimmed it too short, gently scrape out a bit of wax underneath the wick using a butter knife or spoon. This will elevate the wick, making it easier to light again with a long lighter.

Candle Care Guide & Tips for an Optimal Burn Experience

Step 1: The First Burn Matters

To prevent tunneling, allow the wax to melt fully across the surface during the first burn (about 2 hours). This creates an even melt pool, setting the "memory" for future burns.

Step 2: Wick Trimming

Before each burn, trim the wick to 1/4" to 1/2". Remove any curled or blackened bits for an ideal flame. If the flame exceeds 1 1/2", extinguish and trim the wick to keep the burn safe and maximize your candle’s lifespan.

Step 3: Burn Time and End of Life

Limit burn sessions to 2-4 hours to prevent overheating. When only 1/2 inch of wax remains, it's time for a new candle.

Additional Burning Tips

Storage Tips
Always store your candle in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Keep it away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Be sure to store your candle with the lid on to protect it from dust.

Wick Maintenance
Keep your wick trimmed to about 1/4" to 1/2" before each burn. This helps avoid excessive flickering and soot. If your flame grows larger than 1 ½ inches, extinguish the candle, let it cool, and trim the wick again.
