Do you know that according to the NFPA, mindful candle practices help prevent the 2% of home fires once linked to candles between 2019 and 2023?
That’s a serious reminder that while candles create warmth, beauty, and a calming atmosphere, they also demand care.
Before you light your favourite scented candle, take a look at this quick safety checklist, it only takes a minute but can prevent major accidents.
Quick Pre-Light Check
-
Is all packaging (plastic or paper) removed?
-
Is the wick trimmed to ¼ inch?
-
Is the surface stable and heat-resistant?
-
Is the area clear of flammable items (curtains, paper, décor)?
-
Are children and pets safely away?
If you can tick all five, you’re ready to light up safely. Now let’s go through the full checklist in detail.
1. Remove All Packaging
Before lighting, remove any plastic or paper wrapping from the candle or jar. Use sturdy, heat-resistant materials so your candles stay secure and steady as they warm up.
It sounds obvious, but we’ve all been excited to light a new candle straight out of the box
2. Trim the Wick
Grab your scissors or wick trimmer and snip it to about ¼ inch (0.5–0.7 cm) before lighting. It keep the flame even, ensuring a clean burn with no soot marks. Think of this like a little grooming step for your candle, it burns cleaner, lasts longer, and behaves better.
3. Use a Stable, Heat-Resistant Surface
Find a flat, sturdy surface that can handle heat, something like a countertop, coaster, or ceramic tray. Place your candles on smooth, stable surfaces instead of soft spots like runners or tablecloths, it keeps your cozy setup stylish and safe. The steadier the base, the safer the burn.
4. Choose the Right Candle Holder
Use a holder designed for your candle’s size and type. It should be heat-resistant, stable, and able to catch dripping wax safely.
5. Clear the Area Around the Candle
Before lighting up, give your candle a 12-inch “Clear Zone.” Move away curtains, paper stacks, or those dried flowers you love decorating with (looks good I know). A little mindfulness goes a long way, even one small spark handled well keeps your relaxing space warm and peaceful.
(Beauty doesn't have to come with pain every time)
6. Keep Away from Kids and Pets
Curious hands and wagging tails can easily knock over a candle. Keep flames out of reach and never leave them unattended, even for a minute.
If you wouldn’t set your coffee or phone within reach of a toddler or cat, give your candle the same safe distance.
7. Avoid Drafts
If your candle flame is dancing wildly, that’s your sign. Avoid windows, fans, and air vents. A steady flame burns longer, cleaner, and safer. So the wax melts evenly and the glow stays perfectly balanced, just the aesthetic you want.
8. Keep the Wax Pool Clean
Before relighting, check that the melted wax is free of debris like matches or wick trimmings, it keeps your candle looking prettier and helps it last longer. Clearing out those little bits keeps the flame steady and your candle glowing safely.
9. Follow Burn-Time Guidelines
Even if your candle smells amazing, resist the urge to keep it burning all evening. Most brands recommend burning for no longer than 3 hours at a time and stopping when about 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom. It keeps the glass from overheating and extends the candle’s life, win-win.
10. Extinguish Safely
When you’re done, don’t blow hard on the flame. Hot wax can splatter, and glass jars can crack from sudden temperature changes. Instead, use a candle snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax.
And remember the jar stays hot for a while, so let it cool before touching or moving it.
Bonus Tip: If You’re Burning More Than One
If you’re creating that dreamy multi-candle glow, keep them at least 3 inches apart. It prevents them from melting each other and keeps air flow balanced for an even burn. (Basically, give your candles a little personal space, they need it too).
We pour care into every candle so you can light up your moments with peace of mind. Follow these simple tips to enjoy every burn the way it’s meant to be, safe, slow, and soothing.
