At Wick of Hope, each detail of our candle-making process is planned with your well-being and the environment in mind. One of the most interesting features of our candles is the use of wooden wicks. But why do we choose wooden wicks over routine cotton wicks? Let’s explore what makes wooden wicks special and why they’re an essential part of our commitment to sustainability and quality.
The Issue with Conventional Wicks
Ordinary store-bought candles often utilize braided cotton wicks that are sometimes bleached or treated. To keep them upright and improve their burn, these wicks may have cores made from materials such as paper, zinc, or even tin. While regulations have improved, some conventional wicks in the past contained lead, which could release toxic chemicals into the air as the candle is burned.
When a candle burns, not only does it release its fragrance, but it also disperses any chemicals contained within the wax or wick into the air. This can compromise the air quality in your home, particularly if you burn candles frequently.
Why Wooden Wicks?
At Wick of Hope, we wanted to create a product that aligns with our commitment to clean, sustainable, and non-toxic living. That’s why we only utilize untreated wooden wicks in our candles. Here’s why:
Clean Burning
Wooden wicks don’t release unnecessary chemicals or soot, contributing to a cleaner burn and better indoor air quality.
Sustainability
Our wooden wicks are sourced from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified plants. This ensures that the wood used is harvested responsibly and contributes to sustainable forestry practices.
The Unique Experience of Wooden Wicks
Our wooden wicks provide a unique, gentle crackling sound reminiscent of a cozy fireplace, enhancing the atmosphere and making your candle experience even more special. The subtle sound adds an extra layer of comfort and warmth to any room.
To achieve the perfect burn, we carefully test the wicks for each new fragrance and candle size. This means that you might notice different wick sizes and combinations in our candles. Some may have a single large wick, while others feature two smaller wicks for optimal performance.
Candle Care Tips for Wooden Wicks
If you’ve ever noticed your wooden wick curling outward or burning unevenly, don’t worry! This is perfectly normal. Wooden wicks can develop a slight curl as they burn, especially if your candle has multiple wicks.
How to Trim Your Wooden Wick
Once the candle has cooled, gently pinch off the burnt tip of the wick with your fingers. This method helps avoid the burnt pieces from falling into the wax.
Using a wick trimmer can make it easier to reach the wick and get an even trim. We suggest trimming your wick to about 1/8 inch before each burn to ensure a steady flame and an even burn.
At Wick of Hope, we use a wick trimmer to trim each candle before it is labeled and sealed, ensuring each candle is ready for your enjoyment.
Why Regular Trimming Matters
Trimming your wick after each burn helps maintain an even flame, reduces soot, and extends the life of your candle.
